Hi kids. Time for another movie review. If the name of this entry didn't give it away, then im reviewing the latest, most ass kickingest, most scantily cladiest movie ever - 300. all i can say is that im so getting the dvd so i can watch it again and again. this goes into my big tick section of totally kick ass movies.
Based on Frank Miller's graphic novel 300, which in it self was based on a movie, its basically is a telling of the battle of thermopylae. if you dont know your greek history, its about 300 spartan soldiers who defended agains a million strong invading persian army. oh yeah did i mentioned they were scantily clad? only capes and leather crotch protectors for these guys. when your a spartan, what else would you need?
The movie revolves around King Leonidas(Gerard butler), the greek king who leads the 300 spartan soldiers. if there is anyone out there who has read the novel, then he plays the role well. you really get a feel of what he's going through during the whole movie. you feel the dilemma he faces when having to fight an army vastly outnumbering his own. he's harsh yet charismatic and aside from all the shouting and killing he does during the whole movie, you get a feel for his human side.
then there's his wife misses leonidas :P (lena headey). all i can say is that this is one woman you dont mess with. she brings forward the role of strong woman all the way. there's no mushy stuff here. even the intimate scenes between the king and her were intense. her role mostly deals with the political dealings of sparta and her trying to convince the senate to send more troops to aid king leonidas. there is one thing i noticed but it might just be me, and that is every time her there is her bit of story going on, it seems to lose that frank miller feeling. to me it just didnt have that gritty edge frank miller usually brings to all his work, but hey that might just be me right? im just saying. my only question is how in the world did they manage to hide all her tattoos so well?
the queen's main rival in all this is theron(dominic west), a politician who is looking out for himself. this is a villian you wish were dead the second you see him. i mean he portrays scum like no other. you almost believe that there was slime in his veines. thats how low he is. and thats good because it means the role will be memorable and not some other cliche' lawyer-esqe bad guy that has come and gone and not remembered.
and how can i not mention king xerxes(rodrigo santoro). the leader of the invading army amd basically a closet tranny. you get the creeps just looking at him. shaved head and eyebrows, penciled eyebrows and lip liners? all he needs now is a fran drescher wig and its all complete. but appearance aside which is hard to do really, he makes quite a presence. you only see him every so often, but thats more than enought really, his role isnt overplayed and that really makes it shine. and im not talking about all that bling he poked through his face.
the biggest draw of this movie though, is the visual effects. every scene is a work of art. screen shots of this movie would make incredible posters. i know its all blue and green screen but it was all used to its maximum effect. i heard that this movie's post production lasted a year and i can see why. its just a fantastic visual feat. it keeps you glued in your seat just watching every scene and scanning corner to corner looking at the details. it just is that good
and what of the battle scenes? that in it self is already worth the price of admission. for instance, during the first battle scene, i found myself saying "holy crap, what military presicion". and theres lots of blood and limb hacking. those with weak stomachs or a queasy desposition might wanna look away on some of the fights. them limbs be a-flyin yo. the soundtrack also adds to the whole effect. it doesnt drown out the battle like some do, instead, it merely adds to it, enhancing the whole experience.
i could go on and on about this movie but i wont. why? because you go watch it for yourself. i mean it. this is one fo those must see movies that will knock your socks off. if you dont go and watch this movie for whateer reason other than a dying family member, then there is something seriously wrong with your head. watch this movie. find some time in your schedule and watch it.
You know, as i'm stting here in my room doing absolutely at the moment and because i've done everything else there is to do, i thought about why is it that i have a blog. This got me remembering the early morning of januari 1 which is the date i made this blog, neat eh. That was the night Alli left for langkawi and i remember how down i was. So i decided to start this blog as another way for me to vent out my feelings. then a little later i decided that maybe this blog might serve other purposes, which i have yet to decide.
so now i'm typing all this and i have no idea where this is all going to lead. thats ok because my fingers haven't broke and i can still keep typing until they do break, the computer breaks, there's a black out (if there was a black out then you wouldn't be reading this, so that didnt happen) or someone up there hates me and collapses my roof on me and i die (if i did die then i wouldnt be able to post this and none of you would be reading this, so this didnt happen either).
its been a really really REALLY boring past couple of weeks (notice how i highlighted one of the really's), apart from the nightly munchkins card games we(rin, jerome, ah seng, sometimes mac and lately nick) play at jln song. its fun because unlike uno, you actually can direct your evil intentions to specific players (btw, we really gotta apologize to mac about how evil we were at gk :P). im not gonna start explaining the rules because i barely understand them myself. do a google search if your curious.
inti's been no help either. al i get is 2 classes a week, and a 4 day weekend. sounds fun right, then its hits you. theres nothing to do in between those classes. then the rigor mortis sets in. you start feeling like a corpse. like one of them shotgun victims on csi where the dude has no head. so instead of being a corpse i decided to make them. on guild wars. many many many corpses. this i too wont explain so do another google search if you dont know / curious. then i realized how sad i have become because i now have 10 guild wars character which i use constantly. not just 2 or 3 and the rest i keep on the sidelines, i play all 10. one after another sometimes. i realized that this is causing my brain to leak out my ears.
i cant download any new movies on my pc because i can't stand waiting and my harddisk is full. i've read all the books in my room. i tried to play an rpg, but i cant stand how long an rpg is, or how corny the whole mushy love story line is, or how all the lead characters in every single rpg ever made has pointy hair, horrible dress sense, a mission to save the word and that one annoying friend that will eventually get him in trouble.
so i got a call from alli right after that paragraph ended. that cheered me up so i'm not going to go on and on and on about stuff like i previously planned and instead say that the birds are chirping, the flowers smell sweet and the sunset has that particularly nice orange tinge to it. all's well in iainland at the moment and yes, i am that easy to please. mmmm cake.
i think im going to take a shower now. its been an uncomfortably warm day today and i feel like im bonding with this chair and if that continues you'll need a spatula to peel me off it. so to all of you have fun and remember - always wear your high visibility jacket
